Got a great e-mail from Shama today - she's settled and doing well in Arizona. I remember being surprised at her sudden move and for a while there was a litle phone tag about who was where and doing what. So I'm glad this year is ending on a good note for her and I wish her and Tim the best. |

The general belief is that R and D directly help sales - namely if you spend money to develop and market something, your sales should benefit. The New York Times had a great article on this featuring a study conducted by Booz Allen Hamilton management consultants. The study shows: - Size does matter (bigger companies have more money and less risk)
- R and D needs coordination with sales and management
- Handling of the motivation process (to invent and encourage) is paramount

Perhaps because my friends Mag and Allison have just had their first
child and we've been exchanging e-mails regarding everyones health and
visiting times to see the newborn - I picked up this wonderful
"handbook" from one of the clinics I was visiting last week.
Generally not fond of "baby" related literature I was completely taken
in by this leaflet prouced by the DOHR as a licencing guideline
for child care and similar facilities.
Have you ever wondered if your two year old is talking too much or
enough? What about their interest levels in certain toys or geneal
behavior? Just a few pages into this I was looking around and
"analyzing" all the kids I saw around me. Although no guideline should
be taken as an absolute authority on anything - I found the information
in this publication useful - and I don't have any kids.
At least now I have something to talk about with my increasing number of friends who are discovering the joys of parenthood.

Consider album A and a more costly to download album B, αqA>αqB, which both have
the same popularity distribution, αVA=αVB≡αV. From (A3),
(A8) Downloads(A) – Downloads(B)
= ∫q>0(g(q,αqB)-g(q,αqA))F(q/γ,αV)dq
= -γ-1∫q>0(G(q,αqB)-G(q,αqA))f(q/γ,αV)dq < 0
where the second equality is from integration by parts and the inequality again follows
from first order stochastic dominance. After separately integrating the downloading and
non-downloading populations, the change in purchases equation is,
(A9) Purchases(A) – Purchases(B) | Downloads have feedback
= ∫V>p(G(γV,αqA)-G(γV,αqB))(f(V,φ(αV))-f(V,αV))dV
In the absence of feedback effects, φ(αV)=αV, purchases are identical for the two albums

My friend Colby was in Chattanooga Tennesee for a job interview so I drove out there to spend the afternoon with him. On our way to Signal Mountain to visit some family friends we ran across this contraption just around a very sharp curve. I would love to find out more about this house- who built it? and how long it's been there but a quick seach on the web only showed a few results for the "Signal Mountain - UFO House" including the image below. I did find out however that bars in Chattanooga stay open till 230 am even on Sundays - so yes, I would move there in a heartbeat. Being only two hours from Atlanta this small but quaint town is a great travel destination with a nice pedestrian downtown, wonderfully renovated buildings and a vibrant art community. |

Well a short visit to the local mechanic for a new battery turned into a nightmare. Before the evening was out I was down by almost $600 dollars and my car never did get washed. However I am now the proud owner of: - Two new front brakes and related service
- A brand new battery
- Serviced radiator and system flush
- A new gasket cover
- New spark plugs
- ...
So there goes my Xmas cash - I really came home today and comtemplated how wonderful it would be to have Star Trek style transporters |

My roommate is a huge fan of turkish coffee and a few weeks ago he told me how to make a cup - unfortunately it seemed that it would take a good hours to make with all the brews and rebrews that I just gave up. Now he tells me - shortcuts are available with an Eastern European twist and I got so confused I had to turn over to the experts on the internet on brewing this speciality drink. Here's one of the higher regarded tutorials: |

Ellen Simonetti was suspended without pay after her employer Atlanta
based Delta Airlines discovered she had a work related blog. This was
all over the news so I won't detail it here.
I can personally think of several people who spend hours a day logged
into their blogger and live journal accounts - all on company time of
course - but
this goes beyond using computers for non work related things - this
concerns blogging about ones life and when that fine line of personal
and company information is crossed.
Look forward to a lot more of this as blogging continues to explode not
just as a medium of personal expression but also as a work function.
The articles I've read on this all revolve around the issue of posing
in a work uniform and whether other "adult" material was also on her
website which obviously could have been hurtful for her company's
image.
One think I will say to Delta - I'd be more worred about your cash flow
than investigating every blog started by an employee:) If you are
trying to make a case with Ellen then also police your other employees
and have a clear policy on computer usage that's
current with the times.
