One More Thing - Apple Event
Technology

This was the flyer being passed around for Apples "one more thing" event held this week which as people predicted showed a new video Ipod along wiith the new G-5 computers.

There is no dearth of info on the video Ipod so I'd post this flyer for prosperity:)

I still remain anti Ipod - I just think those  prodcuts are too overpriced for what they offer but that still takes nothing away from their design skills.

Computer Crash A Holics - Hosting Advice Needed!

My dear old desktop which has run my website for the past three years just blew a hard drive. I lost my Apache and PHP config files although (again) keeping ones system and data files on separate drives paid off! The site is cool which is great because I really didn't want to regenerate over a hundred photo albums along with all the associated data.

Since it's such an old machine I don't know if it's worth even buying a new hard drive and reloading an OS on it - although it is good to have access to files at home when needed. I might just go with commercial hosting for my main site and eventually bring up a home computer with SSH for remote access and that way my desktop could function as a backup web server. Certainly the bandwidth would be better (commercially) and I could have some fun having access to mail functions such as e-mailable postcards or various event tracking and forum options - something to explore.

For the time being, I'm going to slap this HDD into an external enclosure and see if I can dump it's contents onto my laptop. Anything else (such as recovery utilities or remote ghosting) doesn't seem worth it right now.

Need to find hosting that supports Mambo and PHP Gallery with minimum headaches - in other words, something where I DON'T have to hack my PHP and SQL too much.
Any suggestions?

In preparation for my new job at Emory - essentially working on some charts for a clinical study and some minor DB work associated with that I have to take a few online classes. For the remainder of this week I'll be taking the basic CITI (courses in the protection of human research subjects) materials and possibly some others. I'm excited! It sure beats reading articles on SQL server security holes.

Believe it or not, this actually pays more than the school system job and it's a lot closer to home. Maybe I can even snag a MARTA card of them - who knows.

But here's a funny part from the module I was doing this morning. I've known for a long time that SEVERAL people I know are NOT capable of self determination - and this just proves it.

"An autonomous person is an individual capable of deliberation about personal goals and of acting under the direction of such deliberation. To respect autonomy is to give weight to autonomous persons' considered opinions and choices while refraining from obstructing their actions unless they are clearly detrimental to others. To show lack of respect for an autonomous agent is to repudiate that person's considered judgments, to deny an individual the freedom to act on those considered judgments, or to withhold information necessary to make a considered judgment, when there are no compelling reasons to do so.

However, not every human being is capable of self-determination. The capacity for self-determination matures during an individual's life, and some individuals lose this capacity wholly or in part because of illness, mental disability, or circumstances that severely restrict liberty. Respect for the immature and the incapacitated may require protecting them as they mature or while they are incapacitated."

Wallace and Gromit creator says fire won't halt work

I was really sad to learn that we almost lost the original Wallace and Gromit clay models in a fire yesterday!

CORRECTION - Everything except the new models were lost (sad)

OSLO (Reuters) - A fire that destroyed hundreds of Wallace and Gromit models will not stop new films being made of the plasticine pals, creator Nick Park told Reuters on Tuesday. The fire ripped through a warehouse and destroyed items from Park's Oscar-winning short film series on Monday, the day after the first feature length film on intrepid inventor Wallace and his faithful dog Gromit shot to number one at the North American box office,

"We have to look forward and keep filming new films and not get stuck in the past," Park said during a visit to the Norwegian capital to promote the new film 'Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit'. "I am always thinking up new Wallace and Gromit ideas and I always want to keep doing them," he said.

The sets from the new film were not damaged as they had been in an exhibition and not in the warehouse, he said.

Park learnt of the fire when he rang the production house Aardman Animations to find out how the film had coped it its first week in North America. The film sees Wallace and Gromit use a complex vacuum system to protect vegetables from a rabbit problem in their village. He also created the 2000 animation film 'Chicken Run'. "There was great news that it had risen to number one but at the same time the awful news that all the history, all the archives, sets and models had been lost in the fire," Park said.

He has won three Oscars for best animated short film, 'Creature Comforts' in 1990 and the Wallace and Gromit short films 'The Wrong Trousers' in 1993 and 'A Close Shave' in 1995.

Fire fighters battled flames 100 feet high (30.5 metres) on Monday morning at the warehouse storing memorabilia from all three films in Bristol, south-west England, but could not stop the roof collapsing.

--->FYI
For anyone interested in making a donation to local Indo-Pak sources following the earthquake this past weekend.
______________________

Hey guys,

As we know and propbably are aware from the news that Pakistan was hit quite badly with the earthquake disaster from this weekend. Many people have died, families devastated and lives destroyed. A lot od people that have survived spend days and nights in the the harsh cold weather without any shelter and basic necessities of life. If any of you need more information of what is going on visit any of the major news network websites to catch up yourself. I think it becomes incumbent upon us to help in whatever way we can whether it is through prayers, financial/material aid or volunteer work.

I've been able to get some information regarding ways to provide donations if anyone may be interested. Below is a link that contains information regarding this. UBL, if anyone does not know, is a major bank in Pakistan that is collecting donations for this disaster. Please take time to do something if you can whether its from your thoughts, communication/propagation or aid.

Today marks one year in my new house! I never actually thought I would start living in this neighbourgood but now that I've gotten used to it - it's great! Your life starts changing once you get a place and in ways that you just cannot do in an apartment - simple things such as painting or minor renovation. I guess this means that I am here for a while. It's a good feeling:)

I've got some sort of "bug" and have been taking anti bios for almost a week - so far they seem to have not made any difference. In fact I think I've developed insomnia. My body just feels hot and I just lie awake for hours so my doctor recommended some sleep aids and I said "hell no." I will not flood my body with anything it doesn't need! On other health fronts, I've GAINED ten pounds of weight - making me the HEAVIEST I've ever been and have given up my glasses for contacts. I can no longer say that I've only gained ten lbs since HS because now it's freakin 20! My WAIFDOM is in peril and it's distressing.

Bumvertise your website

Saw this post on the Register about how a techie in Seattle is using bums to carry signs branding his website. Sound like a good idea, why not?

Ben Rogovy, 22, wanted to promote his website for poker fans, but was a bit short in the wonga department. Inspiration struck, however, when he was looking at a cardboard sign commonly held by bums hoping for a hand-out beside the city's freeway exits.

Underwent a diabetic shock which took about two weeks to recover. Numerous doctors visits later there have been drastic changes in medication and diet which should prevent this from ever happening again. The wonderful thing is that I'm using less medication now and a regular schedule is the best way to keep things under control.
