Current Mood - Cheerful
Current Music - Death Cab For Cutie
Thanks to the Star Bar, this was possibly the best seven bucks I've
ever spent in my life...three awesome performances featuring a little
burlesque, some gothic punk and sultry vocals in high heels...what can
I say... show up early, slam a few hurricanes, talk to our very own
Brian Skellie about how to toughen certain parts of your body prior to
piercing them and this is a night you're not likely to forget any time
soon:)

Torchy Taboo (Atlanta's very own Eve Warren of Tease Magazine)

Voodoo Organist (the one man gothic punk blues explosion)
Devil Doll (and very sultry silky vocals by Devil Doll)
Bring on the burlesque! I'm seriously going to be on the lookout for upcoming shows.
!!!!!WHAT A BLAST!!!!!

Current Music - Nouvelle Vague - Self Titled
I knew nothing about Nouvelle Vague until I heard this cover on WREK
Thursday night....hmm, a downtempo version of one of my favorite songs
perhaps even "better" than the infamous Squarepusher version in that
it's not dark and heavy at all... and it turns out that Nouvelle Vague
have an album covering 80's classics that was released about two years
ago. The self titled CD got some rave reviews so I decided to check it
out. So far I'm pleased...
Come on - they covered "Making Plans For Nigel" for crying out loud:)

Not familiar with the Fluffgirl Burlesque Society?
http://www.fluffgirlburlesque.com/home.htm

.jpg)
Need to know more on Burlesque as an art form?
"Burlesque
was originally a form of art that mocked by imitation, referring to
everything from comic sketches to dance routines and usually lampooning
the social attitudes of upper classes. It was often ridiculous in that
it imitated several styles, and combined imitations of authors and
artists with absurd descriptions. In this, the term was often used
interchangeably with "pastiche," "parody," and, at the turn of the 18th
century, "mock-heroic." Possibly due to historical social tensions
between the upper classes and lower classes of society, much of the
humor and entertainment focused on lowbrow and ribald subjects."

Current Mood - Kung Fu
Current Music - Sleeper - Smart
I don't usually write movie "reviews" but I was so disappointed with this film I had to share a few thoughts.
I
don't think I'm spoiling it for anyone by saying that ONG BAK is a head
of a sacred Buddha figurine that is stolen from a small village in
Thailand and the crux of the movie is recovery of the object courtesy
of the hero Tring. Tring (completely innocent yet deadly in that Thai
kick boxing sort of way) wanders into the sleazy underworld of Bangkok
looking for "Don" the thief and therein paves his exposure into all
that is bad - namely drugs, prostitution, shameless land lords, street
thugs, death match venues and of course a few "super" rich thugs for
whom this is just entertainment and a fun way to spend the afternoon.
About
forty minutes into the film we see our first fight - Tring against some
street thugs who are pleasantly "reminding" George/Hamlae (another
migrant from his village who has fallen into petty crime) of the
concequences faced by those who don't "pay up on time." Tring
dispatches the first few and we get to see some his impressive skills
first hand. A chase through the city complete with gravity defying
jumps, loops, creative usage of common street items as weapons and of
course the effortless scaling of building that all martial artists are
experts at.
Commentary - Some of this looks laughable until
you consider that THIS IS NOT ENHANCED. Everything is natural. For ex/
when his pants are on fire - that's a REAL fire in his pants.
The
next scene takes us to the death match venue. Here Tring disposes of
three of the deadliest fighters including a big caucasoid who seems
like he just stepped out of a Metallica video, a quick stepping
Japanese master with a fake afro and last but not least a guy who likes
to throw everything (including the fridge) onto his opponents clearly
following the strategy of "why fight someone when you can crush them."
But still, Tring prevails and comes into contact for the first time
with the actual boss. From now on it's constant action!
Commentary
- Seeing him stand in the arena surrounded by sparks from exploding
generators while people "flip" quarters at him is touching. He
certainly makes enough to get a hot meal that night in contrast to his
village where starvation is setting in due to the still missing statue.
We
get an incredible rickshaw chase scene, some underwater fighting, some
more death style matches and on and on until eventually the "boss"
offers to return Ong Bak to this young trouble maker in return for
"losing" a match in the arena and for leaving town forever. Of course
the boss plans to betray them all but our heroes (Tring, George and his
g's g/friend - whose sister incidently died from a drug OD courtesy of
"Don") escape yet another assassination attempt and trace the boss to
his mine where another large Buddha statue is in the process of being
pilfered. The connection between Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom
are uncanny. Tring single handedly defeats every thug in the cave,
including another hormonally pumped body guard, he tosses aside gooms
with buzzing chainsaws as if they were paper mache and there's some
realistic scenes of breaking limbs, people falling through floors and
more. But still it may not be enough.
Commentary - Buddha to the
rescue - supercharges Trings strength when he is losing to the steroid
drinking super goon, George "sacrifices" himself to save the figurine
and the boss himself is crushed in his wheelchair by 40 tons of
heavenly whoop ass. This should be a lesson to all - don't mess with
Ong with Bak or the two of them in any combination.
The movie ends with the statue being respored to the village and a big party for all:)
Overall
- Cheezy and not very well directed. The backdrop of sleezy Bangkok
could have been better exploited in just about every scene. The "double
takes" could have been avoided completely also. Tring was incredible
but that was about it. Not worth paying to see in the theater or
downloading on your hard drive unless you happen to be into worthless
films simply because they feature some martial arts. By virtue of being
"foreign" though and not featuring invading aliens, killer waves, and
the ever present demonic computer threating to destroy the world with a
logic bomb it still gets 3/5.
In closing let's also have a few seconds of silence for Jef Raskin.
Among other things known as the "father" of the Macintosh computer.
Yahoo had a nice article on him. |

Current Mood - Lethargic
Current Music - DannyO
So after stumbling home last night courtesy of (add your favorite
Belgian beers here) I started checking out some mixes online and came
upon DJ DannyO. He's Canadian and has this nice mix that was broadcast
on AudioEclipse late last year. Since I've always been somewhat of a
trance head and love hearing tracks that now have a "classical" air to
them, I jammed out to this till about 3 AM! Luckily my office shares a
wall with my neighbor who is NEVER home on the weekends so there were
no issues with noise because it got loud! The Lucky 7 "U" track was
played about three times in a row... Found it pretty hard to stay still
while listening to it:) and I really enjoyed the Beastie Boys
transition.
Anyway, if it's your style, you might want to check it out and give the man a shoutout if you enjoy it.
Tracklist:
01. Snuff - Hot 4 U
02. MarcoV vs Jens - Loops & Tings Relooped (Original Mix)
03. Ferry Corsten - Sweet Sorrow (Ferry Corsten Fix)
04. Lucky 7 vs Scot Project - U
05. Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right
06. Ferry Corsten - Its Time (Ferry Corstens Flashover Mix)

You're Aragorn! This ranger from the north is the personification of
bravery. He always thinks of others before himself, and, though he
