228 Billion Camera Phone Images by 2010

The camera phone will become the everyday camera for many consumers over the next four years, according to new research by InfoTrends/CAP Ventures. The industry analysts predict that camera phones will account for 87 percent of all mobile phone handsets shipped in 2010. By then, image-centric and casual camera phone users will have captured a total of 228 billion images, a record-breaking number likely to benefit home printing and instant messaging revenues.

SMS and cell phone network dangers

Although the United states remains far behind Europe in terms of overall SMS usage, the networks here are already vulnerable to the equivalent of SMS "flooding" which could overwhelm networks, causing service disruptions  - a vulnerability that would especially be felt by mobile medical services among others.

Eytan Edar from HP research labs looked at the growing popularity of camera phones and conducted a study on usage patterns covering such areas as frequency of photo posting and what factors affect interest levels. One thing is clear - mobile blogging and photo posting is on the rise! Considering the age of this paper the work seems mildly but not surprisingly prophetic.
