As flash memory and USB devices have fallen in prices, so the desire to
have them be bootable has risen. Various hacks and utiliites to achieve
this have been circulating for a while, this one seems to have gotten a
lot of reads.
Essentially,
You are creating an MS-DOS based start up disk, copying it over to the
USB drive along with the bootsectors themselves. As long as your
computer can read the USB drive - it should have to problem using
this method.

I've been working for the public school system doing in integration project. The system actually has around 9000 employees and over 16000 computers which makes it one of the biggest systems I've worked on. For parents looking for advice on where to educate their kids, I would still have to say - private school or England! At least in Europe the students seem to respect the teacher and the teachers themselves seem to have more of a classical education. As the summer draws to a close, I'd be happy to move onto something else. See some pictures of mostly empty schools here: |

Mythic Imagination Institute and Alliance for a New Humanity
in association with Emory University
present
Deepak Chopra, author of Peace Is The Way, believes it is possible for
individuals to transform their consciousness to such an extent as to
bring war to an end. James Hillman, author of A Terrible Love of War,
believes that we are ceaselessly driven to war by psychological realities
that reveal themselves in a multitude of ways. Perhaps we can tame this
drive, but can it ever be transformed?
These great minds will discuss and debate the causes of war, examine
the possibilities of peace, and explore the role of the imagination
during an evening's conversation moderated by renowned philosopher
and mythologist Jean Houston.
Tickets are available through the Arts at Emory Box Office at

The APS project I'm on basically neccessitates driving around to
different schools sometimes as many as a different one daily. Since
it's summr break the buildings are generally empty - with the exception
of janitors and other staff - and there's no way of knowing what's open
or what work is going on inside. We've been to several where the floors
are being waxed and others where constuction is taking place. No hard
hats required of course:) but these are all things which can and
sometimes do delay our project.
So there's always this joke about inner city schools being one stop
away from collapsing buildings, essentially jails for kids who would be
causing trouble otherwise and I'm happy to say I haven't seen much or
any of this. By and large the APS building are well maintained, staffed
overaly if nothing else and have excellent infrastructure in terms of
technology and communication. That said - there is obviously great
difference based on location. We worked in a school which is located in
projects in South West Atlanta. Nothing bad on the inside but it's not
a place I'd like to leave my car parked overnight.
The best story is (no names being taken here) was a school where the
janitor basically ushered us in and told us to hurry up because locals
tended to walk in and out and take things out with them. He
pointed to "scratches" on the door locks as proof of this.
The advantage of working in the ghetto of course is, access to varied and cheap food but I've had no time.
But I can smell that chicken calling:) |

Ate at this wonderful breakfast place today with a few guys from work.
Standard fare in terms of biscuits and gravy, eggs and various meats
prepared however you want them. Southern food for sure in the sense
that it CANNOT be good for you but it sure tastes good! Mama's Kitchen
is on Memorial Dr between Moreland Ave and Boulevard heading towards
the Grant Park discrict. They close rather early in the afternoon so
get there early to enjoy great food in an old school cafeteria setting.
I want to think this place has been here for a while and I hope it
stays.

Had a wonderful weekend in Cordele Ga at a friends family lakehouse. Three days of great food even better company leaves the soul very refreshed and ready to tackle the next challenge! Got some good information on the old town and efforts being made to renovate it. My favorite part was probably the state park with some WW11 era planes and tanks. You can look at lakehouse pictures here: |

Saw See Martian Red at 10 High - which is the little yet cozy performance space underneath the Dark Horse Tavern in Virginia Highlands. You can't really beat this venue in terms of deals - $5 to see three bands on a weeknight with plenty of options to walk to before and after. I found the band energetic and the crowd polite. I think it's a great idea to showcase local talent in this manner. A great night out! |
