Ok, so as predicted, the US largely ignored this event but the rest of the world knows that soccer is king! From the German collaborative mobile blogs and other projects reported by this site and countless others, we knew that World Cup 2006 was as much a testbed for mobile technologies as watching the worlds finest dribble the football ball across the field. Italians led the mobile video field with 6% of users checking out footage followed by the French with 3% with 3G users comprising 14% of all usage.

As Tekrati said: "Soccer enthusiasts across the world are passionate about their sport, and European fans are notorious for their hardcore dedication in supporting their country's team. Italy secured their first World Cup title in 24 years with a penalty shoot-out victory over France, to the delight of Italian fans," said Kanishka Agarwal, Vice President of New Products, Telephia.

Germany followed Italy for greatest penetration of mobile subscribers accessing World Cup content. Germany had 4%. France, Sweden and the UK tied with 3% penetration, trailed by Spain with 2%.

"The World Cup showcased how important mobile phones have become as a source of immediate information and relevant content for consumers, beyond just a tool to communicate. Soccer fans were able to tap into the frenzy of the games and show their connection and support for their favorite teams through their cell phones," added Agarwal.

Eight percent of European mobile subscribers who accessed soccer content on their phone watched via mobile TV. Sky Sports was the top channel, securing a 14% share of World Cup mobile TV users. Overall, World Cup content received through text alerts was most popular (38%), followed by content through wireless Internet at 29%. 19% downloaded a World Cup ringtone, 15% downloaded wallpapers, and and 14% downloaded video clips.

The question I have is did this happen just because Italy actually won the World Cup or is there some greater cultural undercurrent here? I don't just mean mobile culture but fascination in general with film and cameras. It was just a few months ago that Italian directors shot an acclaimed feature on "New Love Meetings" with a Nokia N90. Although grainy and lacking some finer features we expect from a cinematic production directors  Mencarini and  Seghezzi  saw  a phone based medium as a logical choice given the low costs of production, the mobility afforded due to lack of heavy equipment and perhaps most importantly - the intimacy of the medium afforded to those shooting video with a mobile phone. You decide!
