Technorati's quarterly State Of The Blogsphere reports are well known. The latest shows Japanese as the leading posting language with almost 37% of the total followed closely by English at 36%. The report also states that most Japanese blog posts tend to be shorter than English counterparts with a focus more on jokes or quick comments vs the more traditionally structured posts and that a large number of these are being posted by mobile devices.
Japan Market News dives a little deeper into this. According to them, over one third of Japanese prefer blogging by phone stating convenience and ease of connecting to various services as primary reasons for their conversion. Some companies such as JMI are already interested in cashing in this trend. JMI is developing applications to track real time consumer behavior where individual products would be rated and commented on in real time, allowing instantaneous capturing and analysis of trends as they emerge - the same thing we do today with blog TAGS, just taken to the next logical lever. Finally the article mentions Japanese psychology as a factor in all this. Japanese tend to not want to stand out in a group but their extreme comfort with modern technology allows them to express opinions none the less. The article ends by wondering what sort of new marketing areas this might help develop and revolutionize. Good question, don't you think?
