Nokia announced today that future S60 Symbian phones wil feature an open source browser. Incorporating Apple's technolgy and developed under a generous BSD licence, the browser opens up many venues for developes small and large alike to hop on board. So far, response from the community has been overly positive as our snag from the Comeks photostream shows.
Browser will incorporate Apple's technology: "The browser, to be included in future releases of the Series 60 software, uses two components already employed by Apple Computer in its Safari Web browser for its Mac OS X operating system. The components are based on KHTML and KJS, two elements of the open source Konqueror Web browser. Konqueror runs on the K Desktop Environment, open-source software that provides a graphical user interface for the Linux operating system."
BSD licencing allows for flexible development: "Nokia is releasing the code as a BSD License, which she describes as a liberal license that enables anyone to use the code to develop a commercial offering."
Built in support for many emerging browser technologies: "Features of the browser include the capability to work well in low memory situations, a mouse pointer for a similar navigation experience as on the desktop, and support for dynamic HTML and AJAX. Developers will be able to create their own user interface for the browser, a key way for them to differentiate their products, Epting said. Support for web technologies is a positive trend, Lie said."If the Nokia browser is able to run web applications I'd say that's good for the web and from that perspective good for all vendors including Opera," he said. Historically, website developers have had to use special code in order to adequately display their sites on mobile devices."
Above comments via Techworld and PCWorld. Nothing elaborate - just an accurate reflection on what many in the community have been echoing for a while. .What do the users think about this you may wonde? Well, perhaps this recent image posted via Comets and Shozu by Torbo can provide a clue: It sure does (kick ass) and I think this is a great offering for the upcoming S60 3rd edition OS. Hats off to Nokia for opening this product to the community. We'll leave how this affects their relationship with Opera for another day. |
