What Is Fotolog? Fotolog.net is a website that lets you easily put your digital photos on the web in a daily log format. If friends/family have their own Fotolog pages, you can see everyone's latest photos on one page and link back and forth to each other. And, you can comment in each other's guest books.
So is that like a Blog or Weblog? Sort of. Blogs are generally a lot of words with a few images. Fotolog posts tend to be a lot of images with a few words. After all, for most people, it's easier to see something interesting than to say something interesting. Some say that the web is "a writing medium" -- we say that the web-logging revolution isn't necessarily about the writing -- it's about personal, continual publishing irrespective of whether it's done through words or images. What isn't Fotolog? Fotolog is not an online photo album for you to store all of your digital photos and get them printed out. So, if you've got 50 or 60 photos from your 3-year-old's birthday party at Chuck E Cheese that you want to share with the world, we recommend Fotki, Ofoto, or ShutterFly for that. Fotolog is more the kind of place where you'd put up a different photo of your children each day or each week so your friends and family could check in to see how they're growing up.
So I shouldn't put all of my photos on my Fotolog page? No. We want you to use Fotolog to share your latest, greatest photo. Some people will post a daily photo. Some will post a couple photos per week. Do my photos need to be artistic? Nope. They can be about whatever you want. But, if you stick with it and try to post a new photo every day, we bet that you'll find yourself looking for interesting subjects and unusual shots and becoming a better and better photographer along the way. Do I need to have a digital camera? Nope. Many of our Fotolog Members use traditional film cameras, Polaroids and even pinhole cameras. They scan their photos onto their computers and upload them from there. Heck, you can forget the camera alltogether and just put some flowers or your fishbowl or your baby right on your scanner too if that's what you want. Why use Fotolog if I can just email photos to my friends and family?
- Your friends/family will see your network of friends/family photos on your page
- Your friends/family can check out your Fotolog page when they want to, not when you bug them to
- Fotolog automatically creates an archive of your past photos - so, for example, people can see '"how the baby's grown" whenever they want
- You'll have your own continually updated website without doing very much
- Fame and fortune will result from being featured on the Fotolog homepage
Can I buy prints of my photos? Sorry. Not yet. It's one of the things we're looking into for the future. We think it would be really cool to be able to print out a coffee-table book of your favorite photos at the end of the year.
About Us
Who's Involved? Fotolog.net is brought to you by three guys who do this in their spare time because they enjoy it. Adam Seifer (cypher) is CEO and is in charge of the site and the ongoing evolution of the products and services. He brings new ideas and product management expertise, in addition to being a completely obsessed user. Scott Heiferman (heif) had been publishing daily photo on his personal website for a couple years and had the original idea of producing an easy way for friends and family to do the same thing in an interconnected community. Heif came up with the original Fotolog interface that has thumbnails of recent photos on one side and friends and favorites on the other, and that makes Fotolog so surfable. Spike is our technology wizard and builds all of this incredible Fotolog functionality. From scratch. While you're sleeping. (Let's hear it for Spike!)
