Red Herring reported a new mobile streaming service by Pedagog - the British developer of the OCTV technology which with its IrisCamera hardware allows video streaming for mobile phones without the need for an internet connection or related hardware. Pedagog developed this technology in 2000 for use with the Windows CE platform using LuraTechs Wavelet compression scheme.
The new service will allow consumers to search its directory of public video streams and view them on their phones. The article used locating a Mercedez Benz dealership in your local area as an example. Limitations of this technolgy such as the limited battery life of present handhelds and small screen resolutions are also addressed. However, if Pedagog can combine its offerings more towards experiencing something novel then the business model has increased potential for success. The company plans to do this with its video player for mobile phones.
The service is availalbe in select areas to anyone with a compatible phone and costs $2 (US) per MB of data, which equates to five short movies. Potential cusomers include emerging markets in India and China. Pedagog specializes in wireless multimedia and has several offerings in the OCTV and telemedicine areas. |
