Hardware modding, Treo 650 shorter antenna hack

A very important aspect of technology is the ability to modify it to ones needs - just look at all the cell phone coves, faceplates and the whole accessories industry that stems from this. However, for PDA's this is not always the case. That said, I'm glad I stopped by the SPUG forums, where a user has been modding his Treo 650 by hacking it with a shorter antenna. See the pictures below and I think you'll agree - it does look gorgeous.

modifying treo 650 by outfitting it with a shorter antenna

This project started because I wanted to built an antenna-less treo or a treo with a shorter antenna. I decided to go for the latter because it will be easier for users to upgrade by just getting an antenna and plug it in. Thus I bought an antenna and started looking at how it was constructed. Thanks to treotricks, I was able to have an idea how the antenna was made. I actually did some rough measurements on the dismantled antenna shown on treotricks website (on the monitor itself!!!) before I gotten the spare antenna and decided there may be a possibility of making it shorter. Finally received the spare antenna in my hands, broke it apart and stared at it for a while and I realised how I could make it shorter while still using the same internal components!!

treo 650 mod

I am very happy with the final product. Three coats of metallic black paint on it, and it turned out great. Even my wifey commented how great and different it looks right now, that it doesn't look yucky to her anymore when the treo still has the original antenna. The only flaw on this mod is that one side of the antenna cap did not sit fully into the slot, but only slightly. This is because I did not glue it properly when I attached the cap to the core during the prototype construction. However it is not noticeable and I'm still very satisfied with the final outcome!!
